The world’s largest municipal body in terms of money and financial aspects is planning to spend more on core departments this year. The civic budget for 2019-2020 is likely to witness more than 10% increase in size. Till December the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has spent only 37% of the 2018-19 budget.
Sources said that the invested will be more in the big shot projects such as the Mumbai Coastal Road project and the Mumbai Sewerage Disposal Project (MSDP). In the last budget, the Coastal Road Project has got Rs. 1500 crore and the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road project has got the allowance of Rs. 100 crore.
As the work on this project has already started, the spending may be higher that what which is allocated this year. The MSDP may get the more than what it is allocated as the BMC is planning to speed up the project.
The departments which will continue more attention this year are roads, storm water management and health. In the year 2018-19, roads and storm water management both continued to get more value as purposed in the budget.
Rais Shaikh, the Samajwadi Party leader in BMC, said the civic body should focus on the smaller projects too rather than only focusing on the big projects. The city is also facing many issues which should be flashed soon. “ There is a question mark on the competence of the civic body to deliver big projects, be it GMLR or cycle tracks. Therefore, the BMC should focus on providing basic amenities like solid waste management, primary education and better water distribution,” he said.
