Karnataka has been shaken by the alleged rape and murder of a woman engineering student whose burnt body was found Raichur on April 16. Her boyfriend has been arrested, the local SP says.
Angry social media users have been demanding justice for the young victim. They have posted horrifying photos, but the police have not released any pictures of the crime scene.
It was initially thought that the woman had committed suicide: a note was found when her body was discovered.
According to Raichur SP Kishore Babu, the suicide note said she was scoring poorly in exams and that no one was responsible for her death. A report card of provisional results for the year 2018-19, accessed by India Today TV, shows that she failed two of her exams and got low passing scores in a few others.
But the student’s family suspected that she was murdered. On social media, some claim that her killers forced her to write the suicide note.
The Raichur SP said the victim’s boyfriend had been arrested based on her parents’ complaint. He added that he could not comment on the post-mortem.
Initially, there was only a murder case, but the SP later said rape had been included in the FIR.
By Friday afternoon, a change.org petition seeking justice for the young woman had received well over 30,000 signatures.
